Rachel awoke with a start, her heart still pounding from the nightmare. She looked around her bedroom, relieved to see that it was just a dream. But as she went to get out of bed, she noticed something strange.
There was a faint scratching sound coming from the other side of the wall, just like in her dream. She listened carefully, trying to make out the source of the noise. It sounded like someone was clawing at the wall with their fingers.
Rachel's heart began to race again as she realized that her dream was not just a nightmare, but a premonition. The man in the shadows was real, and he was coming for her.
She grabbed her phone and dialed 911, her hands shaking so badly that she could barely hold onto it. She whispered a desperate plea for help into the receiver, praying that someone would arrive in time.
But as she waited for the police to arrive, the scratching at the wall grew louder and more urgent. She could hear the man's ragged breathing on the other side, and she knew that she was running out of time.
Rachel made a split-second decision. She grabbed a baseball bat from under her bed and ran to the door, flinging it open and sprinting outside. She ran as fast as she could, her heart pounding in her chest and the sound of the man's footsteps behind her.
She didn't stop until she reached the police station, where a group of officers were waiting to take her statement. As she told them what had happened, she couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. She had escaped the man in the shadows, at least for now. But she knew that he would be back, and next time, she might not be so lucky.
